When Australia
said YES

In 2017, Australia reached a turning point. After decades of advocacy for equal rights, respect and recognition, the question of marriage equality was put to the nation.

The YES campaign was more than just a campaign. It was a collective effort that became a movement – bringing together communities, volunteers and voices across the country.

Conversations unfolded everywhere – in streets, workplaces and around kitchen tables. With more than 16 million Australians eligible to vote, an extraordinary 79.5% choose to take part. Our challenge was clear: Show up everywhere – clearly, consistently and at scale.

Behind the visibility was a vast, coordinated effort. IVE partnered with the YES campaign to produce and deliver high volumes of printed campaign materials, merchandise and signage – from how-to-vote cards and campaign collateral to coreflute signs distributed across communities nationwide. As the central production partner, IVE helped bring consistency to a campaign spanning every state and territory, equipping volunteers with the tools to be visible, start conversations and support informed choice.

When the results were announced, 61.6% of Australians had voted YES. Every single state and territory recorded a majority in favour.

It was a defining step forward for equality in Australia… and a moment IVE is proud to have played a part in.
